Question

I've hired an illustrator for my book cover and now I'm worried that he might own the book cover copyright. Do I have reasons to worry?

Well, not quite. Authors hire book cover designers and illustrators all the time. After all, you want your book to look beautiful, not only to be beautifully written. As long as the book cover designer or the illustrator gives you the written permission to use the cover in whatever you need, you are fine. But, if you really want to hold the copyright, then you need to pay them for it, if they accept, separately.
